To form a business or nonprofit, you must choose an entity name that meets state
requirements. In addition to making sure the name is available, you may need to include specific
corporate suffixes such as “Inc.” or “LLC.” This guide details suffix requirements for different
entity types in all 50 states.
"(a) The name of a corporation or foreign corporation registered to transact business in this state must contain: (1) the word “corporation” or “incorporated”; or (2) an abbreviation of one of those words.
(b) Subsection (a) does not apply to a nonprofit corporation or foreign nonprofit corporation, or to banks, trust companies, savings and loan associations, or insurance companies." AC §10A-1-5.04
Professional Corporation:
Must contain the words "Professional Corporation" or the abbreviation "P.C." or "PC" and shall otherwise conform to any rule promulgated by a licensing authority having jurisdiction of a professional service described in the certificate of formation of the corporation. AC §10A-1-5.08
LLC:
The words "Limited Liability Company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C." or "LLC". These words or their abbreviation shall be the last words of the name. AC §10A-1-5.06
A corporate name must contain the word "corporation", "company", "incorporated", or "limited", or an abbreviation of one of these words. AS §10.06.105
Professional Corporation:
"(a) The corporate name of a professional corporation shall contain the last name of one or more of its shareholders, unless the regulations of a particular regulating board or the ethics of a profession permit the use of a corporate name which does not include the surname of any present or former shareholder. The corporate name shall be ended by the word “Corporation,” “Incorporated,” or “Limited,” or by the abbreviation “Corp.,” “Inc.,” or “Ltd.,” or by the words, “a professional corporation,” or by the abbreviation “P.C.” AS §10.45.120
LLC:
The name of a limited liability company stated in the company's articles of organization must contain the words "limited liability company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C.," or "LLC". The word "limited" may be abbreviated as "Ltd.," and the word "company" may be abbreviated as "Co." AS §10.50.020
"1. Shall contain the word "association", "bank", "company", "corporation", "limited" or "incorporated" or an abbreviation of one of these words or words or abbreviations of like import in another language... 3. Notwithstanding paragraph 1 of this subsection, shall not include the words "bank", "deposit", "credit union", "trust" or "trust company" separately or in combination to indicate or convey the idea that the corporation is engaged in banking or trust business unless the corporation is to be and becomes actively and substantially engaged in the banking, credit union or trust business or the corporation is a holding company holding substantial interest in companies actively and substantially engaged in the banking or trust business. 4. Shall not contain the words "limited liability company" or "limited company" or the abbreviations "L.L.C.", "L.C.", "LLC" or "LC", in uppercase or lowercase letters." ARS §10-401
Professional Corporation:
"A. The name of a domestic professional corporation and of a foreign professional corporation authorized to transact business in this state, in addition to satisfying the requirements of sections 10-401 and 10-1506, shall: 1. Contain the words "professional corporation", "professional association", "service corporation", "limited" or "chartered" or the abbreviation "P.C.", "P.A.", "S.C.", "Ltd.", "Chtd.", "PC", "PA", "SC", "LTD" or "CHTD"." ARS §10-2215
LLC:
"A. The name of a limited liability company as set forth in its articles of organization shall: 1. Contain the words "limited liability company" or "limited company" or the abbreviations "L.L.C.", "L.C.", "LLC" or "LC", in uppercase or lowercase letters. 2. Not contain the words "association", "corporation" or "incorporated" or an abbreviation of these words. 3. "Corporation", "Company", or "Incorporated", or shall contain an abbreviation of one of those words; but the name may not end with the word "Company" nor the abbreviation "Co." if the final word or abbreviation is immediately preceded by "and" or any symbol for "and". AC §4-26-401
Professional Corporation:
Contain the name of one or more shareholders or the name of one or more deceased former shareholders and shall end with "Chartered", Limited", the abbreviation "Ltd.", the words "Professional Association", or the abbreviation "P.A.". AR Code §4-29-207
LLC:
The name of each limited liability company as set forth in its articles of organization must contain the words "Limited Liability Company" or "Limited Company" or the abbreviations "L.L.C.," "L.C.," "LLC," or "LC." The word "Limited" may be abbreviated as "Ltd." and the word "Company" may be abbreviated as "Co." AC §4-32-103
Close corporations: "corporation", "incorporated" or "limited" or an abbreviation of one of such words CCC §202.a
Professional Corporation:
Must comply with the name style requirements of the regulatory agency which has jurisdiction over the profession. CCC §13409.a
LLC:
The name of a limited liability company shall contain the words limited liability company, or the abbreviation L.L.C. or LLC. Limited may be abbreviated as Ltd., and company may be abbreviated as Co. CCC §17701.08
"(a) The entity name of a corporation shall contain the term or abbreviation "corporation", "incorporated", "company", "limited", "corp.", "inc.", "co.", or "ltd." CRS § 7-90-601
Professional Corporation:
"(5) For an entity that is specifically permitted by C.R.C.P. 265 or title 12, C.R.S., to use the words "professional company", "professional corporation", or abbreviations thereof in its name:
(a) "P.c." or "pc" shall be a permitted abbreviation for such an entity that is a corporation;" CRS § 7-90-601
LLC:
"(c) The entity name of a limited liability company shall contain the term or abbreviation "limited liability company", "ltd. liability company", "limited liability co.", "ltd. liability co.", "limited", "l.l.c.", "llc", or "ltd."." CRS § 7-90-601
Nonprofit Corporation:
"(b) The entity name of a nonprofit corporation may, but need not, contain the term or abbreviation "corporation", "incorporated", "company", "limited", "corp.", "inc.", "co.", or "ltd."." CRS § 7-90-601
Shall contain the word “corporation”, “incorporated”, “company”, “Societa per Azioni” or “limited”, or the abbreviation “corp.”, “inc.”, “co.”, “S.p.A.” or “ltd.”, or words or abbreviations of like import in another language. GSC §33-655
Professional Corporation:
Shall contain the words "professional corporation" or the abbreviation "P.C." and shall also contain either a word or words descriptive of the professional service to be rendered by the corporation or shall contain the last name of one or more of the present, prospective, or former shareholders or of persons who were associated with a predecessor. GSC §33-182h.
LLC:
"(a) The name of a limited liability company shall contain the words “limited liability company” or the abbreviation “L.L.C.” or “LLC”. “Limited” may be abbreviated as “Ltd.”, and “company” may be abbreviated as “Co.”." GSC §34-102
Nonprofit Corporation:
Shall contain the word “corporation”, “incorporated” or “company”, or the abbreviation “corp.”, “inc.” or “co.”, or words or abbreviations of like import in another language. GSC §33-1045.
Shall contain 1 of the words "association," "company," "corporation," "club," "foundation," "fund," "incorporated," "institute," "society," "union," "syndicate," or "limited," (or abbreviations thereof, with or without punctuation), or words (or abbreviations thereof, with or without punctuation) of like import of foreign countries or jurisdictions (provided they are written in roman characters or letters). DC §8-102-a-1
Professional Corporation:
Shall contain either a word or words descriptive of the professional service to be rendered by the professional corporation, or any of the qualified related professional services to be rendered by the professional corporation, or shall contain the last names of 1 or more of its present, prospective or former shareholders or of persons who were associated with a predecessor person, partnership, professional corporation or other organization or whose name or names appeared in the name of such predecessor organization. The corporate name shall also contain the words "chartered" or "professional association" or abbreviation "P.A." The use of the word "company," "corporation" or "incorporated" or any other word, words, abbreviations, affix or prefix indicating that it is a corporation, in the corporate name of a professional corporation is specifically prohibited. DC §8-617.
LLC:
Shall contain the words "Limited Liability Company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C." or the designation "LLC". DC §18-102
Nonprofit Corporation:
Shall contain 1 of the words "association," "company," "corporation," "club," "foundation," "fund," "incorporated," "institute," "society," "union," "syndicate," or "limited," (or abbreviations thereof, with or without punctuation), or words (or abbreviations thereof, with or without punctuation) of like import of foreign countries or jurisdictions (provided they are written in roman characters or letters). DC §8-102-a-1
The name of a business corporation shall contain the word "corporation", "incorporated", "company", or "limited", or the abbreviation "Corp.", "Inc.", "Co.", or "Ltd.", or words or abbreviations of similar import in another language. D.C. Code §29-103.02(a)
Professional Corporation:
The name of a professional corporation shall contain the phrase "professional corporation" or the abbreviation "Chtd", and may not contain the word "company", "incorporated", "corporation", or "limited", or an abbreviation of those words. D.C. Code §29-103.02(c)
LLC:
The name of a limited liability company other than a professional limited liability company shall contain the words "limited liability company" or "limited company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C.", "LLC", "L.C.", or "LC". The name of a professional limited liability company shall contain the words "professional limited liability company" or the abbreviation "P.L.L.C." or "PLLC". "Limited" may be abbreviated as "Ltd.", and "company" may be abbreviated as "Co.". D.C. Code §29-103.02(f)
Nonprofit Corporation:
The name of a nonprofit corporation need not contain any particular word or abbreviation. D.C. Code §29-103.02(b)
"(1) A corporate name: (a) Must contain the word “corporation,” “company,” or “incorporated” or the abbreviation “Corp.,” or “Inc.,” or “Co.,” or the designation “Corp,” or “Inc,” or “Co,” as will clearly indicate that it is a corporation instead of a natural person, partnership, or other eligible entity." FS §607.0401
Professional Corporation:
"(1) The name of a corporation or limited liability company organized under this act may contain the last names of some or all of the individual shareholders or individual members and may contain the last names of retired or deceased former individual shareholders or individual members of the corporation, limited liability company, a predecessor corporation or limited liability company, or partnership. (2) The name shall also contain: (a) The word “chartered”; or (b)1. In the case of a professional corporation, the words “professional association,” or the abbreviation “P.A.” or the designation “PA”;" FS §621.12
LLC:
"(1) The name of a limited liability company: (a) Must contain the words “limited liability company” or the abbreviation “L.L.C.” or “LLC” as will clearly indicate that it is a limited liability company instead of a natural person, partnership, corporation, or other business entity." FS §605.0112
Nonprofit Corporation:
"(1) A corporate name: (a) Must contain the word “corporation” or “incorporated” or the abbreviation “Corp.” or “Inc.” or words or abbreviations of like import in language as will clearly indicate that it is a corporation instead of a natural person, unincorporated association, or partnership. The name of the corporation may not contain the word “company” or its abbreviation “Co.” (b) May contain the word “cooperative” or “co-op” only if the resulting name is distinguishable from the name of any corporation, agricultural cooperative marketing association, or nonprofit cooperative association existing or doing business in this state under part I of chapter 607, chapter 618, or chapter 619." Professional Corporation:
The name of a professional corporation shall satisfy the requirements of Code Section 14-2-401; provided, however, that, in lieu of the use of a word or abbreviation as required by paragraph (1) of subsection (a) of that Code section, the word "associated," the phrase "professional association," the phrase "professional corporation," or an abbreviation of any of them may be used. LLC:
Must contain the words "limited liability company" or "limited company" (it being permitted to abbreviate the word "limited" as "ltd." and the word "company" as "co.") or the abbreviation "L.L.C.", "LLC", "L.C." or "LC". O.C.G.A. §14-11-207
Nonprofit Corporation:
Must contain the word "corporation," "incorporated," "company," or "limited," or the abbreviation "Corp.," "Inc.," "Co.," or "Ltd.," or words or abbreviations of like import in a language other than English. O.C.G.A. §14-3-401
Must contain the word "corporation", "incorporated", or "limited", or the abbreviation "corp.", "inc.", or "ltd." HRS §414-51
Professional Corporation:
May be any name permitted by law expressly applicable to the profession in which the corporation is engaged or by a rule of the licensing authority of the profession. HRS §415A-8
LLC:
The name of a limited liability company must contain "limited liability company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C." or "LLC". "Limited" may be abbreviated as "Ltd.", and "company" may be abbreviated as "Co.". The letters in the name of a limited liability company must be letters of the English alphabet. HRS §428-105
The name of a business corporation must contain the word "corporation," "incorporated," "company," or "limited," or the abbreviation "Corp.," "Inc.," "Co.," or "Ltd.," or words or abbreviations of similar import in another language; provided however, that if the word "company" or its abbreviation is used it shall not be immediately preceded by the word "and" or by an abbreviation of or symbol representing the word "and." If the limited liability company is a professional entity, the name may include the word "professional" before the word "limited" or the letter "P" at the beginning of any of the permitted abbreviations. Idaho Statutes § 30-21-302
Nonprofit Corporation:
The name of a business corporation must contain the word "corporation," "incorporated," "company," or "limited," or the abbreviation "Corp.," "Inc.," "Co.," or "Ltd.," or words or abbreviations of similar import in another language; provided however, that if the word "company" or its abbreviation is used it shall not be immediately preceded by the word "and" or by an abbreviation of or symbol representing the word "and." Professional Corporation:
A professional corporation shall adopt a name consisting of the full or last name of one or more of its shareholders; except that if not otherwise prohibited by law, rules of a regulating authority or the canons of ethics of the profession concerned, a professional corporation may adopt a fictitious name. The corporate name shall end with the word "chartered" or "Limited" or the abbreviation "Ltd.", or with the words "Professional Corporation" or the abbreviation "Prof. Corp." or the initials "P. C.". 805 ILCS §32-415-9
LLC:
Shall contain the terms "limited liability company", "L.L.C.", or "LLC", or, if organized as a low-profit limited liability company under Section 1-26 of this Act, shall contain the term "L3C". Shall consist of letters of the English alphabet, Arabic or Roman numerals, or symbols capable of being readily reproduced by the Office of the Secretary of State; shall be the name under which the limited liability company transacts business in this State unless the limited liability company also elects to adopt an assumed name or names as provided in this Act; shall contain the word "trust", if it is a limited liability company organized for the purpose of accepting and executing trusts. 805 ILCS §180/1-10
Nonprofit Corporation:
May contain, separate and apart from any other word or abbreviation in such name, the word "corporation," "company," "incorporated," or "limited," or an abbreviation of one of such words. Must end with the letters "NFP" if the corporate name contains any word or phrase which indicates or implies that the corporation is organized for any purpose other than a purpose for which corporations may be organized under this Act or a purpose other than a purpose set forth in the corporation's articles of incorporation. 805 ILCS §105/104.05
(a) The name of a business corporation or nonprofit corporation must contain the word "corporation", "incorporated", "company", or "limited", or the abbreviation "Corp.", "Inc.", "Co.", or "Ltd.", or words or abbreviations of similar import in another language. IC §23-0.5-3-2
Professional Corporation:
The name of a business corporation that is a professional corporation must contain the words "Professional Service Corporation" or "Professional Corporation" or abbreviations of these words. In addition, only a professional corporation in which all shareholders are physicians licensed under IC 25-22.5 may use the term "medical" in its corporate name. A licensing authority may by rule adopt further requirements than those specified in this subsection as to the names of professional corporations organized under this article. IC §23-0.5-3-2
LLC:
(d) The name of a limited liability company must contain the phrase "limited liability company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C." or "LLC". The name of a master limited liability company must comply with IC 23-18.1-6-7(b). The name of a series with limited liability must comply with IC 23-18.1-6-7(c) and IC 23-18.1-6-7(d). IC §23-0.5-3-2
Nonprofit Corporation:
(a) The name of a business corporation or nonprofit corporation must contain the word "corporation", "incorporated", "company", or "limited", or the abbreviation "Corp.", "Inc.", "Co.", or "Ltd.", or words or abbreviations of similar import in another language. IC §23-0.5-3-2
Must contain the word "corporation", "incorporated", "company", or "limited", or the abbreviation "corp.", "inc.", "co.", or "ltd.", or words or abbreviations of like import in another language. Iowa Code §490.401
Professional Corporation:
Shall contain the words "professional corporation" or the abbreviation "P.C.", and except for the addition of such words or abbreviation, shall be a name which could lawfully be used by a licensed individual or by a partnership of licensed individuals in the practice in this state of a profession which the corporation is authorized to practice. LLC:
The name of a limited liability company must contain the words “limited liability company” or “limited company” or the abbreviation “L.L.C.”, “LLC”, “L.C.”, or “LC”. “Limited” may be abbreviated as “Ltd.”, and “company” may be abbreviated as “Co.”. Iowa Code §489.108

LLC:
The real name of a limited liability company shall end with the phrase "limited liability company" or "limited company" or the abbreviation "LLC" or "LC," provided, however, if the company is a professional limited liability company the name shall end with the phrase "professional limited liability company" or "professional limited company" or the abbreviation "PLLC" or "PLC." In the name of either a limited liability company or a professional limited liability company, the word "limited" may be abbreviated as "Ltd." and the word "Company" may be abbreviated as "Co." Nonprofit Corporation:
End with the word "corporation," "company," or "limited" or the abbreviation "Corp.," "Inc.," "Co.," or "Ltd." or words or abbreviations of like import in another language, provided, however, that if a nonprofit corporation's name includes the word "company" or the abbreviation "Co.," it may not be immediately preceded by the word "and" or the abbreviation "&"; or if a professional service corporation, shall end with the words "professional service corporation" or the abbreviation "P.S.C." Louisiana has different name requirements for different industries.
LLC:
Shall contain the words "limited liability company", the abbreviation "L.L.C.", or the abbreviation "L.C.". For low-profit limited liability companies, shall contain the words "low-profit limited liability company", the abbreviation "L3C", or the abbreviation "l3c". Louisiana RS §12:1306
Nonprofit Corporation:
The corporate name may be in any language, but expressed in English letters or characters. Louisiana RS §204
The name of a professional corporation must contain the words "chartered," "professional corporation," "professional association" or "service corporation" or the abbreviation "P.C.," "P.A." or "S.C." 13 MRSA §22A-736
LLC:

LLC:
Limited liability companies.- The name of a limited liability company must include: (1) The words "limited liability company"; (2) "L.L.C."; (3) "LLC"; (4) "L.C."; or (5) "LC". Maryland Code §1-502(b)
Nonprofit Corporation:
The name of a corporation must include one of the following words or an abbreviation of one of the following words: (1) "Company", if it is not preceded by the word "and" or a symbol for the word "and"; (2) "Corporation"; (3) "Incorporated"; or (4) "Limited". Maryland Code §1-502(a)

Professional Corporation:
Shall end with the word ''Professional Corporation'', ''Corporation'' or ''Incorporated'' or the abbreviation ''P.C.'', ''Corp.'' or ''Inc.'' or any other word or words which in the judgment of the state secretary indicates that the professional corporation is incorporated. M.G.L. §156A.8
LLC:
Shall contain the words ''limited liability company'', ''limited company'', or the abbreviation ''L.L.C.'', ''L.C.'', ''LLC'' or ''LC''. M.G.L. §156C.3
Nonprofit Corporation:
The name of the organization must indicate that it is a corporation. Churches and other religious societies are exempt from this requirement. MA Gen. L Chapter 155 § 9
Except as provided in chapter 2A for a professional corporation, the corporate name of a domestic corporation shall contain the word "corporation", "company", "incorporated", or "limited" or shall contain 1 of the following abbreviations: corp., co., inc., or ltd., with or without periods. 284 MCL §450.1211
Professional Corporation:

LLC:
The name of a domestic limited liability company shall contain the words "limited liability company", or the abbreviation "L.L.C." or "L.C.", with or without periods or other punctuation.
