Prince Edward Island Certificate of Practice

Agency:Architects Association of Prince Edward Island (AAPEI)
Eligible Entity Types:
  • Corporations
  • Partnerships
  • Partnership of Corporations
  • Sole Proprietorships
Ownership Requirements:

Corporations

  • At least 2/3 of the partners, principals, or directors of the partnership or corporation are architects
  • At least one of the directors of the corporation is an architect and is the beneficial or registered owner of no fewer of each class of voting shares in the corporation than the number of such shares held by any other shareholder or director
  • Each director who is an architect must be an AAPEI member

Non-resident Corporations

  • At least 2/3 of the partners, principals, or directors of the partnership or corporation are architects
  • Not less than a majority of the issued shares of each class of voting shares of the corporation are beneficially owned by and registered in the names of architects

Partnerships

  • At least one of the individual partners is an architect having an interest in the partnership of not less than that of any other individual or corporate partner

Partnership of Corporations 

  • At least one of the individual partners is an architect having an interest in the partnership of not less than that of any other individual or corporate partner

Sole Proprietorships

  • The principal of the proprietorship is an architect
Insurance Requirements:

Professional Liability Insurance in amounts not less than $250,000 limit per claim and an aggregate limit of $250,000 per year. 

Notes:

Names and designations for firms or corporate names shall comply with the following:

  • Anonymous designations are in general acceptable. A name or designation may include the name, names or initials of a past or present member.  The name, names or initials of past or present members of the Association of Professional Engineers of Prince Edward Island may be included.
  • Firm names or designations shall not include the name or initials or individuals other than as authorized in Subsection 6.5.2. (a).
  • Firm names or designations may use the word "Architect" or any addition, abbreviation, derivation or variation thereof, and also the term "partner(s)","  and partner(s)", "associate(s)", "and associate(s)", or "partnership" if associates or partners in fact exist.  The term "associate" or "partner" in this context means another member of the design profession. 
  • The design professions in this context shall include persons duly qualified in the fields of landscape architecture, community planning and interior design, but does not include technicians or technologists.
  • The name of the firm must match the articles of incorporation exactly. If wishing to use both an English and French name then ensure both versions of the name are given on your application. 
Qualifying Individual Requirements:

Depending on the type of entity, the practice of architecture must be carried out under the supervision and responsibility of one of the following: 

  • Corporations: a director, officer or employee of the coroporation
  • Partnerships: an architect who is a partner
  • Partnership of Corporations: an architect who is an officer, director, or employee of a corporate partner
  • Sole Proprietorships: the principal of the sole proprietorship who is an architect

    • ($500 CAD application fee + $500 CAD annual fee + $150 CAD HST)
  • Annual fees will be prorated by 50% for applications received after July 1
