All businesses with a physical location in the unincorporated area of Columbia County are required to obtain a business license and pay an occupational tax. Businesses without a physical presence in the unincorporated area Columbia County are required to obtain a business license and may be required to pay an occupational tax.

The occupational tax is based on the number of employees (including owners) at this location and is computed on a full-time equivalency (FTE) basis.

  • 6-10 FTE: $190
  • 11-20 FTE: $375
  • 21-50 FTE: $940
  • 51+ FTE: $2,250

 

Out-of-state businesses should only include the employees who work in Columbia County. The occupational tax is pro-rated by 50% for businesses that begin after June 30 in any calendar year.

Occupational tax is due once the application is approved. A notice with the approval, tax amount, and payment options will be emailed when complete.

  • Private Employer Affidavit (notarized)
  • State or Federal license, if applicable
    • Notarized licensee permission may be required if the State or Federal license holder is not the applicant of the Occupational Tax
  • Georgia Secretary of State Registration, if applicable
  • Home Occupations Compliance signed & dated by the applicant (only for home-based or mobile businesses). 
  • Permanent Resident Card, if applicable
