Connecticut Motor Vehicle Dealer License

Insurance Requirements:

Connecticut Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate (Form R1325e) obtained from your insurance company. The original of this form must be received and must indicate the number of plates (even if 0) being insured. Fax/email is only acceptable if coming directly from the insurance company. 

Bond Requirements:
  • $60,000 surety bond 
  • The name and address on the bond must match the business name and address that appear on the application exactly

Qualifying Individual Requirements:

Connecticut Motor Vehicle regulations require at least one mechanic fully qualified to properly service the vehicles sold or repaired with a thorough knowledge of the product sold or serviced. If the mechanic is an employee, the mechanic must be employed at the licensed location (substantiated by payroll records for a minimum of 35 hours in each 7 day week).

  • $700 license fee (new dealers) (due after application review)
  • $560 license fee (used dealers) (due after application review)
  • $140 per dealer plate fee (due after application review)
  • $5 per plate safety plate fee (due after application review)

  • Franchise Certificate/Letter (New Dealers Only)
  • Privacy Rights Form (one must be completed for applicants listed on Form K-7)

  • Waste Oil Disposal Certificate
  • Trade Name Certificate from Town Clerk in which the licensee will do business
  • Vehicle Storage Rates Requirement Application
  • Sales Tax Permit
  • Connecticut Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate
  • Clear photo copy of driver's license for all owners, partners, members, or corporate officers listed
  • Letter from prior employer on business letterhead indicating experience including time employed, position held, and specific duties performed (out-of-state applicants and applicants whose previous employer closed)
  • Pictures of the following signs:
    • Post business hours on custom entry door
    • Waste oil tank
    • Front of building showing bays
    • Tools and Equipment
    • Office
    • Floor Drains
  • Completed MIU GP Notification Form
  • Completed MIU GP Attachment A Form
  • Deep Referral Sheet
  • Deep Compliance Checklist
  • Surety Bond
  • Dealer Agreement and Standard Provision (New Dealers Only)
  • Certificate of Existence, if applicable
  • Corporate/Company Agent for Service of Process
  • Copy of Operating Agreement, if applicable
  • Copy of Articles of Organization and Amendments, if applicable
