Licenses

Cook County Contractor Registration

Agency:Cook County Department of Building and Zoning (IL)
Insurance Requirements:
  • General Liability Insurance in an amount not less than $1,000,000
  • The certificate holder must read Cook County Building & Zoning 69 W Washington #2830 Chicago IL 60602
Bond Requirements:

Bonds are required in varying amounts for demolition, demolition leveling, sign (billboard), private sewage disposal system, restoration performance (construction trailer), restoration performance (excavation, grading and foundation) and wireless telecommunication contractors. These bonds must be completed and submitted with evidence of the Power of Attorney at the time of registration.

Filing Method:

Agency Fee:
  • $150 per trade made payable to the Cook County Collector
  • $2 recording fee if the application includes bonds made payable to the Cook County Clerk
  • Fees for initial applications must be paid via check or money order only
Required Attachments:
  • Firms, Corporations, LLCs: Copy of Articles of Incorporation or current Annual Domestic Report
    • Document must list all officers and include your FEIN
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Declaration of Child Support Obligations form completed by the Owner/Officer registering, included in packet
  • State of Illinois Roofing License, if applicable
  • Original Bond, if applicable
    • Bonds must be walked or mailed in

Registration Renewal

Contractor Registration Renewal Application

Filing Method:

Mail, email, in-person

Agency Fee:
  • $75 per renewal trade
  • $150 per any new trade being added to the application
  • $2 recording fee if the application includes bonds made payable to the Cook County Clerk
  • Renewal fees can be paid online
Due:

Annually by December 1

Notes:

Renewal notices with instructions will be mailed out in the beginning of December

Notes:

Once an application has been submitted via email, the applicant will receive an invoice and instructions on how to pay by credit card online. Send a PDF copy of the receipt to complete the registration process.

Required Attachments:
  • Corporations: Copy of Articles of Incorporation
  • Current copy of supervising Electrician's license
    • Must be issued by a city, town, or village in the State of Illinois that has an electrical commission that administers an examination
  • Copy of supervising Electrician's driver's license
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Declaration of Child Support Obligations form completed by supervising Electrician

Registration Renewal

Filing Method:
  • Renewal payments can be made online
  • A copy of the receipt must be emailed in to keep the registration current

Notes:

There is no application to renew an electrical contractor registration. To keep a registration current, pay the annual fee before the expiration of the license and email a copy of the receipt in a PDF document.

Cook County Homeowner's Contractor Registration
