Kentucky DBA / Fictitious Name / Trade Name Registrations
Business entities that plan to use a name other than their legal business name may need to register an assumed name. Assumed name registration can take place at the state, local, or state and local levels of government. State specific registration information is available below.

| Is registration mandatory?: | Registration of an assumed name is required for most entities that plan to use a fictitious name. Sole-proprietorships that use an alternate name are required to file with the county clerk. |

| County Level Filing: | Only sole-proprietorships are required to apply for assumed name registration with the county clerk. Other entities may, however, be required to file a copy of their secretary of state assumed name application with the county clerk. |
| Does registration prevent others from using the name I choose?: | Registration of an assumed name does not offer name protection, however, names must be distinguishable from all other names on record with the secretary of state. |
