North Carolina Motor Vehicle Dealer License

Insurance Requirements:

Comprehensive Liability Insurance or Garage Coverage. The policy must indicate the number of dealer plates covered. 

Bond Requirements:
  • $50,000 surety bond for 1 established salesroom
  • $25,000 surety bond for each additional established salesroom(s)

Qualifying Individual Requirements:

Every dealership must employ at least one North Carolina-Licensed Sales Representative who works 25 or more hours per week.

  • $115.50 license certification
  • $46.25 for the first 5 dealer plates
  • $23.25 for each additional dealer plate
  • If located in Randolph County, add $1 to each dealer plate fee
  • If located in Wake or Orange/Durham Counties, add $15 to each dealer plate fee

  • Surety Bond
  • Certificate of Liability Insurance or Garage Coverage
  • Assumed Name Registration from the applicable county
  • Articles of Incorporation, Certificate of Authorization, or relevant North Carolina Secretary of State filing
  • Corporation Meeting Minutes, if applicable
  • Proof of 12-hour licensing course approved by the DMV (used dealers only)
  • Franchise Agreement (new dealers only)
  • Zoning Approval Letter

Sales Representative Licenses are renewed biennially with the associated Motor Vehicle Dealer license. These licenses have the same expiration date.
