Applicants must have current assets that exceed the total current liabilities by at least $75,000, as reflected in an agreed-upon procedures report on a form provided by the Board or an audited financial statement prepared by a certified public accountant or an independent accountant who is engaged in the public practice of accountancy.

Insurance Requirements:

There is not an insurance requirement for licensing. However, there may be insurance requirements for individual projects or for pulling building permits.

    • Information regarding the reference’s knowledge and experience with the applicant or person about whom the reference is being provided.

Applicants must have current assets that exceed the total current liabilities by at least $17,000 or have a total net worth of at least $80,000.

Insurance Requirements:

There is not an insurance requirement for licensing. However, there may be insurance requirements for individual projects or for pulling building permits.

Bond Requirements:

Applicants must submit a $175,000 surety bond or meet working capital or net worth requirements.

Notes:
  • A contractor license is required for entities that take on construction related projects costing $30,000 or more.
  • Limited licensees are limited to working on projects that cost $750,000 or less.
Qualifying Individual Requirements:

A qualifier is a responsible managing employee, owner, officer, or member of an LLC or partnership who successfully completes the examination required for licensing. Exams completed by qualifiers determine the classification(s) on the license. Qualifiers may qualify up to two licenses provided the qualifier is a managing employee, owner, officer or member of an LLC or partnership. Qualifiers are not licensees but are the holders of a qualifying credential that is required for licensure. Qualifying exams can be added to or removed from licenses however licenses themselves cannot be transferred. See NCAC Title 21 Chapter 12A .0205(a).

There is not an insurance requirement for licensing. However, there may be insurance requirements for individual projects or for pulling building permits.

Applicants must submit a $1,000,000 surety bond or meet working capital requirements.

Notes:

A contractor license is required for entities that take on construction related projects costing $30,000 or more.

Domestic Entities:

  1. Register your business entity with the North Carolina Secretary of State - Business Registration Division
  2. Complete the background check process.
  3. Complete the online license application through the Licensing Board for General Contractors
  4. An eligibility letter will be mailed and a qualifying individual must pass the relevant exams administered by PSI.

 

Foreign Entities:

  1. Foreign qualify your business entity with the North Carolina Secretary of State - Business Registration Division
  2. Complete the background check process.
  3. Complete the online license application through the Licensing Board for General Contractors (include exam waiver form or NASCLA documentation if applicable)
  4. An eligibility letter will be mailed and a qualifying individual must pass the relevant exams administered by PSI.

  • Financial statements must also be submitted during the renewal process. Typically these do not need to be reviewed or audited but can be prepared in-house.
  • Qualifier is required to complete a total of 8hrs of Continuing Education- 6 hours of electives and the 2-hour Mandatory Course

Amendment
Change of Qualifier

Form:

One of 5 possible forms depending on the new qualifier's exam status:

  • Examination Transfer Authorization: This form is used to transfer the exams of existing qualifiers already on a North Carolina License.
  • Examination Request Form: This form is used to schedule a potential qualifier to take a North Carolina exam.
  • NASCLA Waiver Form: This form is used to add someone who has completed a NASCLA exam and is not currently on a North Carolina License.
  • Examination Waiver Form: This form is used to add an individual who completed an accepted examination from another state. The Examination Waiver form must be completed by the other state licensing board.
  • Drop Qualifier Form: This form is used to remove a qualifier from a license.

If the qualifying party leaves, licensees must notify the Board no later than 10 days after the date of separation and must replace the qualifying party within 90 days.

Notes:
  • Licensees must notify the Board in writing in the event a qualifier ceases to be connected with their license. The notice should include the date on which the qualifier was last connected.
  • To remove a qualifier from a license, send a letter signed by the president/owner of the license indicating the name on the license, the license number, the name of the qualifier, and they date of their disassociation from the license. This letter can be emailed to licensing@nclbgc.org.
