Licenses are typically required for individuals and businesses that provide construction industry services.
This guide contains information about construction industry licensing in Illinois.
Do not submit payment with application. The Division of Boiler Safety will process Applications in the order they are received and shall issue the applicant a license upon receipt of payment or notify the applicant of the reason for the denial.

All business types:
A valid Certificate of Authorization to use the ‘R’ symbol stamp issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors.
The name and address of all officers as defined in Section 2121.20 of the Boiler and Pressure VesselSafety Repairer Regulations. The address shall be an actual street address and shall include City, State, and zip code. A post office box number is not acceptable.
If an assumed name is to be used, a copy of the assumed name certificate.
A certificate of insurance in the amount of $300,000 to cover losses naming the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Division of Boiler Safety as a certificate holder.
Corporations & LLC's
The name and registered address of the corporation, and the name and address of the Registered Agent.

Persons who, or businesses that, as of January 3, 2000, were installing or repairing fire sprinkler systems in the State of Illinois and had at least 3 years of prior experience installing or repairing fire sprinkler systems may employ either a Designated Certified Person or a Responsible Managing Employee (a person responsible to provide supervision and to assure that each Sprinkler System is installed and repaired in accordance with State Law). All other persons or businesses must employ a Designated Certified Person.
Designated Certified Person. A copy of the Designated Certified Person’s Illinois Professional Engineering License or NICET Level III certification in fire protection technology; automatic sprinkler layout.
Responsible Managing Employee. On a separate sheet of paper please provide:
The Responsible Managing Employee’s qualifications and last three years of work experience; and the name, address and telephone number for each person who can verify those qualifications and work experience
The business’ (license Applicant’s) work experience since January 1, 2000, identifying all the jobs in which the business has installed or repaired fire sprinkler systems; and the name, address and telephone number for each person who can verify that work experience.

Revised 03/31/2016 3) Limited Partnership-a letter of authority from the Secretary of State's Limited Partnership Department. d) A certified copy of the Assumed Name Filing from the County clerk if the business operates under an assumed name. e) For your employees or licensees involved in the inspection and/or testing of existing fire sprinkler systems and/or control equipment, provide proof of either (i) NICET Level II certification in Inspection and Testing of Water Based Systems (or its equivalent) or (ii) evidence of satisfactory completion of certified sprinkler fitter apprenticeship program. f) A list of each license issued by any state, local or federal governmental entity in the previous 3 years to engage in fire sprinkler contracting and a statement of whether the licensee is currently subject to disciplinary action or has been adjudicated to have violated a license. g) Proof of payment of taxes to the Illinois Department of Revenue.
If you fail to renew the license by the license’s expiration date, a reinstatement fee of $100 shall be assessed in addition to the $1,500 fee.

Illinois General Contractor License
Not required
General Contractor Company licensure is not required on the State level in Illinois.
General Contractors are licensed at the county and city level. There is no state level license.
Illinois Lead Abatement Contractor License

$500 licensure fee. Applicants may instead submit a $250 fee if requesting an initial license received and approved between December 1 and March 1 that will expire on May 31 of the current year. Illinois Roofing Contractor License

All contractors and subcontractors are required to have a general liability insurance policy, providing coverage in the amount of $100,000 for bodily injury, $300,000 for each occurrence, and property damage of $25,000. Evidence shall be filed along with the application to the Village in the form of a certificate of insurance, naming the Village of Bolingbrook an additional insured and certificate holder under said policy
Bond Requirements:
All General and Subcontractors are required to file with the Village of Bolingbrook Building Division, a bond issued by a surety company in the principal amount of ten percent (10%) of the total cost of all material and labor necessary to perform the desired task, but not less than twenty thousand dollars ($20,000).
City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection - Small Business Center (IL)
Notes:
A City of Chicago regulated business license for the activity of home repair (home repair license) is required to engage in the business of fixing, replacing, altering, converting, modernizing, or improving any property primarily designed or used as a residence. If the work requires a building permit, a general contractor license is required instead of a home repair license.

Notes:
A drain layer contractor license is required to construct, repair, adjust, rod, clean, line, or use a camera to inspect a subsurface structure designed to collect or transport stormwater or sanitary wastewater.

A City of Chicago electrical contractor license is required to install, alter, or maintain any wiring or equipment regulated by the Chicago Electrical Code. This includes electrical, lighting, communication, and alarm systems and equipment.

An elevator mechanic contractor license is required to engage in the business of constructing, installing, altering, or maintaining the mechanical components of any elevator, escalator, moving walk, dumbwaiter, platform lift, manlift, mechanical equipment used for the raising or lowering of any curtain, stage or orchestra floor, or any other conveyance device specifically covered and described in the Chicago Conveyance Device Code.

Have worked as an elevator mechanic for at least four years or have successfully completed an elevator constructor mechanic apprenticeship program that is recognized by the United States Department of Labor
